Selection process is underway for scholarship opportunity offered by Surabaya local government for students in the East Java capital who memorize religious scriptures.
Ministry of Religious Affairs’ Islamic Education unit in Surabaya announced that judge panel that includes experts of each religion is currently in the process of assessing submitted applications, and the result will be announced online.
“After the process is completed, the result will be announced on the website of Surabaya’s education office,” head of the unit M. Arifin said on Friday, March 18.
The website is dispendik.surabaya.go.id.
The unit also revealed that 1,792 students submitted their applications for the scholarship while the designated quota is 1,160.
Muslim, Protestant, Catholic, Hindu, Buddhist, and Confucian students take part in the selection process, and the scholarship opportunity is offered to students in three levels of education: kindergarten, elementary school, and junior high school.
Surabaya’s head of education office Yusuf Masruh previously announced that selected students will be granted monthly allowance.
He also expressed his appreciation to all applicants and his hope that the scholarship scheme can birth strong students who understand and can implement their religious values.
“From what I’ve seen, these students are very smart and brave during the selection process,” Masruh said. “Hopefully, through this scholarship, the students can be a strong and independent individuals.”
